Thermal Flowmeter Technology How Thermal Flowmeters Work Thermal flowmeters use the thermal properties of the fluid to measure the flow of a fluid flowing in a pipe or duct. In a typical thermal flowmeter, a measured amount of heat is applied to the heater of the sensor. Some of this heat is lost to the flowing fluid. As flow increases, more heat is lost. The amount of heat lost is sensed using temperature measurement(s) in the sensor. The transmitter uses the heat input and temperature measurements to determine fluid flow. Most thermal flowmeters are used to measure gas flows. Thermal flowmeters represent 2% of global flowmeter sales. The amount of heat lost from the sensor is dependent upon the sensor design and the thermal properties of the fluid. The thermal properties of the fluid can and do vary with pressure and temperature, however these variations are typically small in most applications. In these applications where the thermal properties of the fluid are known and relative...

Wireless Automatic Meter Reading Overview As the name implies, the term Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) is commonly used when your utility meters are read without any user intervention. Traditionally, meter reading required (and still common) personnel to walk to the meters and record the readings off the dials or displays. This data is fed back into the utilities database to generate the consumption data from which customer bills are generated. For most utilities, the data needs to be collected from Gas, Water and Electric meters. AMR eliminates the need to manually read the meter readings and reduces the effort required to record the readings. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a term commonly used to represent meter systems that go beyond AMR into remote utility management. This may include facilities such as remote shutoff, two way communications to the meter and more detailed data collection including parameters such as tamper, direction, maximum usage, average usag...

RESIDENTIAL WATER METERS SINGLE JET The single-jet water meter is mainly used as a divisional counter in the households. It’s simple design makes it a product with a competitive price and highly reliable operation. The principle of operation is given by the incidence of a single tangential stream of water with a turbine mounted in a radial position within the body of the meter. The rotation of the turbine transmits the motion to the reading mechanism allowing the measurement of the volume of water passing through the meter. The rotation speed of the turbine is proportional to the water flow in inlet and any variation in the relationship between the characteristics of the turbine and the water flow would entail an alteration of the error curve of the meter. There are three single-jet water meter types: - Wet dial meters with the reading mechanism completely immersed in the water and direct transmission from the turbine to the gears of the mechanism itself. - Semi dry dial meter w...

WOLTMAN TYPE WATER METERS The Woltmann meter is mainly used in the industrial field or for larger residential supplies. This meter is of the helical reel type and it is made of a piece of pipe flanged at the ends in which is inserted a measuring unit bearing an helical reel the axis of which corresponds with that of the pipe. The reel, whose fins are arranged according to upright helicoids, is placed in rotation by the passage of 'water. The measuring unit can be quickly replaced for repair without the need for removal of the main meter body. The reading mechanism with its gears is mounted inside an hermetically closed and sealed capsule. Transmission from the reel to the reading mechanism takes place via magnetic coupling. Woltman type water meters can be used for flow rates higher than Qn15 m 3 /h. They are thereby distinguished by ensuring an especially low head loss, even with high flow rates. The newly developed measuring insert with a special construction of the tur...

What are the advantages and disadvantages between a mechanical flow meter and a magnetic flow meter? The primary difference between a mechanical meter and a magnetic meter is that a mechanical meter has moving parts and a mag meter doesn’t. Typical examples of mechanical meters are target meters, where liquid hits a spring loaded plate and the amount of movement of that plate relates to velocity, and turbine meters, where liquid flowing over a set of angled blades causes those blades to rotate and that velocity is used to determine flow rate. Another example would be a positive displacement (PD) or oval gear meter where a set amount of material moves through chambers and the amount of material that moves through these chambers as they rotate is counted and converted to flow rates. There are other mechanical designs, but you get the picture. A mag meter works by having a conductive liquid flow through a lined flow tube and of the flow passing through a magnetic field...
